My name is Colin Start and I am delighted to be Mens Section Captain for 2017.
I was delighted when Chas Guest stepped forward to be my Vice Captain, as we have known each other for many years and I know we will work very well together. We will be doing all we can to make this a great year in the Mens’ Section.
For those members who don’t know me – I took up this great game about 13 years ago, was well & truly bitten by it and joined the Club within a few months of trying to hit a straight ball at Hemingford.
I worked for Lloyds Bank for 41 years, and over the years was moved to a number of towns and cities across East Anglia & South Midlands. Having had to move house four times in five years my family got fed up constantly packing and unpacking our possessions so we decided to settle in Swavesey and the family decided I could commute if I ever got moved again! So I had some interesting daily commutes as the years went by! Basildon, Milton Keynes, Hemel Hempstead & Chelmsford before I was asked to go down to the bright lights of The City in London.
In my younger days I played a lot of squash - and my knees are now paying the price for that!
I still live in Swavesey with my wife Karen and our daughter Rebecca. Some of you will already know our son Matt, who joined the Club when he started playing golf about 3 years ago
With regards to my chosen charity this is Arthur Rank Hospice. Their aim is to relieve sickness and suffering of people with life limiting conditions, and to assist their families or their carers in Cambridgeshire and the surrounding area. The charity is tasked with raising £2m pa to support the services at the hospice
My father in law, who I was very close to, & my wife’s sister, who passed away in her early 40’s, both spent their final days being wonderfully cared for at Arthur Rank and this charity is therefore very close to my heart
I am very much looking forward to this year. There will be lots going on with Club matches, Mixed matches, competitions and I am particularly looking forward to Captains day on 6th Auguest. I do hope we get a great turn out from members for this, together with the Club Championship played over 2 days, 10th & 11th June.
Throughout the year we have competitions every weekend, with the exception of the last weekend in each month. These are available for friendlies, Swindles etc. The competitions are great fun, with a mix of singles, doubles and team games and if you are new to the club it is a great way to quickly get to know other members. In addition there are friendly swindles on Saturdays, around midday, and very often the members who play in these, then play in the competition on a Sunday.
Also during the summer months there is a mid week medal on the first Wednesday of the month
We have matches against other clubs during the summer, and some of these are held at weekends, and some are during the week. Details will be put up on the notice board throughout the year, and will be also be placed on this web site.
I will add further updates as we go through the year – a year which I hope will be fun, with some good golf and great banter. We have some great golfers at the Cambridgeshire and all are really friendly and keen to welcome new members.
In closing I wish you a great year, sprinkled with some great golf amongst the great company of fellow golfers
